Ever thought about advertising on Facebook? I’ve just setup another new campaign and it reminded how easy and cost effective Facebook can be for targeted marketing campaigns.
They’ve posted a helpful guide to help you make the most of their social ads https://www.facebook.com/adsmarketing/
My phone contract is up in June and I’m already trawling the internet to find out what new features I can look forward to on my IPhone 5.
With Apple gaining some unfavourable press around the release of IPhone 4 it is crucial they got 5 spot on. As (almost) always, Apple have the spec locked away in a vault in California somewhere so everyone speculates wildly, here are a few of the most popular rumours.
Screen size increases to 4″ by going edge to edge? – link
4G? Not sure this one is likely and not that bothered 4G looks a couple of years off in the UK anyway.
IPhone Nano? Smaller, cheaper version so Apple can capture more of the younger phone users market.
3D graphics? Is the current trend for 3D coming to the IPhone? Not sure what the benefits might be so again not that bothered.
Slide out Qwerty keyboard? Are Apple going to follow many of the other Smartphones and add a physical keyboard?
8MP camera? It’s inevitable they will have some improvement to the camera, whether it’s higher res or better flash or auto face recognition, we’ll wait and see.
Faster Processor? Dual core? Quad core? I love faster processors but I’m thinking quad core might be a bit of overkill on a phone and imagine what it might do to the already troubled battery life!
New OS? Is Apple ready to do the first major overhaul of the operating system which set the benchmark for all other phones when it was released in 2007? What about a new radial type interface that Apple recently patented?
Facetime HD? Many users have been disappointed with Facetime, is this the improvement they’ve been waiting for?
Near Field Communication? No need to carry your credit/debit cards any more, use your IPhone to pay for stuff.
White? Will the white IPhone will be making a comeback?
New casing? Thinner? Plastic or Aluminum back? Scratch proof screen?
Integrated SIM? Now that Apple has finished its exclusive deals with providers they are keen to encourage users to buy direct from them, an integrated SIM could be assigned to whatever network you want at point of purchase.
FM receiver, highly rumoured for the last few IPhones, could this be the one?
Solar powered charging system? I think there’s probably as much chance of this happening as Glasgow having enough sun to charge a pixie’s wristwatch.
LED projector? Don’t think so.
So that’s all the rumours for now, I’ll add more as they inevitably surface. Roll on June (rumoured date of release).
Can anyone give a good reason why Facebook have messed with the photo viewer? I’m not one of these people who moan every time FB update features because usually when you get used to them you realise it is an improvement but I’ve been with the new photo viewer a while now and it still doesn’t seem any better.
So if you don’t like it either go to a photo then press F5 (refresh) to your page and restore the white background. Yeah!!!
Save yourself the hassles of sending large PDFs to colleagues or customers. Yudu allows you to create free e-brochures to share, they are more user friendly than PDFs and all you need to send is a URL.
Make sure you PDF is formatted one page at a time and the higher the resolution the better.
There are a couple of downside but you would expect that from a free program. Yudu promote themselves and a carbon neutral message adjacent the first page of every publication, which is OK but it can be a bit instrusive.
Other downside which I’m not sure any e-brochure software has solved yet, it’s not compatible with IPhone. Damn you IPhone and your lack of flash!!!!
Everyone, everywhere is talking about Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, Four Square………..but see before you listen to the person who says “our business/service/brand needs to be on Facebook/Twitter/??? consider the following:
1. Do you have the time to devote to keeping it up to date?
It takes seconds to setup a profile but do you have the time to upkeep it. An out of date profile is worse for your reputation than none at all.
2. Do you have anything interesting to contribute?
Your posts are going to sit alongside your followers updates from friends and family, are they really going to be interested in your latest bit of news which barely interested raised an eyebrow in the office?
3. What are you trying to achieve?
It might be nice for your ego if your business has 500 followers but in reality it would be better having just two who were potential customers.
2. Advertise on a page highlighting the top design trends for 2010 ( A very interesting read incidentally)
3. Use the ad below to entice design savvy readers onto your website.
4. If anyone was stupid inspired enough to click through then wow them with awful design and crappy music(???) on your homepage http://www.lt-designmatters.co.uk/
5. Design does matter but obviously not to these people
Under the how it works tab is also a very interesting wee app that illustrates just how fast the internet is growing and how many Google searches are processed every day!
Some info about the data from the BBC site
The data used to generate the interactive treemap visualisation was collected by the Nielsen company and covers the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Brazil, US and Australia. The figures represent unique users for the month of January 2010.
The categories – such as retail, social networks, search/portal – were defined by the BBC. Because some websites have more than one use, they could fall within more than one category (e.g. Yahoo). However, the treemap only classifies them once.
The maps were produced using the Prefuse Flare software, developed by the University of California Berkeley.
I’ll not even pretend to be shocked that the Daily Mail has again produced sloppy copy with their cock up over incorrectly claiming an ex-policeman was propositioned by men after posing as a 14 year old girl on Facebook. Read the full Guardian report here
From the Daily Mail
In an earlier version of this article, we wrongly stated that the criminologist had conducted an experiment into social networking sites by posing as a 14-year-old girl on Facebook with the result that he quickly attracted sexually motivated messages. In fact he had used a different social networking site for this exercise. We are happy to set the record straight.
Turns out it was a different, as yet unnamed Social Network Site, so did they:
a. make a mistake in their facts,
b. think with the recent bad press about Facebook in the Ashleigh Hall case, it would be a bigger story if they slapped Facebook’s name in the mix,
c. did they not even know the difference and just used Facebook as a blanket term for all SNSs?
Hopefully Facebook will decide to join Kate Winslet, Keira Knightly, Danni Minogue, Cherie Blair, David Duchovny, Lisa Marie Pressley, Diana Rigg and others on the illustrious list of pending or successful Daily Mail lawsuits.
They presented a very convincing case proving that in societies where the gap between rich and poor is smaller then the key indicators such as crime, happiness, teenage pregnancy, literacy, social mobility are all better. Richard told us that since the industrial revolution there has been a race to continually grow the economy but we have now reached the top of the growth cycle and continued growth will not mean an improving lot for our society. Both authors then illustrated this with a series of graphs leaving us in no doubt that the statistics backed up their theory.
Looking across nations time and time again the nations with the poorest results had the greatest inequalities such as UK, Portugal and USA. Coming out on top in many of the statistics were the more even societies like Sweden, Japan and Norway.
Questions with the sizeable audience turned to trying to find an explanation or solution. Higher taxes, more equal pay deals and the political parties approaches to the issues were all discussed before the authors left the stage to sign and discuss the finer points with some interested audience members.
I highly recommend you read the book, it is hugely thought provoking and presents a wholly convincing argument. I’ll leave you with a quote from Kate Pickett at the event when the the graph on display showed that the USA was one of the worst countries in the world for social mobility, flying in the face of the claim of being “the land of opportunity”
“If you really want to pursue the American dream, it’s probably better to go live in Norway.”
I love the Iplayer, being able to catch up with programmes I missed like the wonderful “Wonders of the Solar System”makes me think why can’t all TV be like this?
Why should we be punished by the schedulers because we want to watch good programming at a different time from everyone else?
I watch the IPlayer through my PS3 which is brilliantly easy to do apart from one little glitch. The search function on the PS3 IPlayer is badly flawed. Programmes in the highlights don’t appear in a search, programmes listed in categories aren’t listed under the channel etc. etc. There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to it, that I can see anyway.
It must be some sort of technical problem but does anyone know of a solution?
Hopefully someone at the BBC is looking into it and the IPlayer continues to be one of the best things on tele at the moment!
Aye Write! is one of my favourite times of the year. Not only do I get to catch up with loads of friends from the world of books but by chairing events I get to meet and speak with a number of new authors and usually learn a great deal about a wide range of subjects while spending a weekend in the wonderful Mitchell Library.
On Friday I chaired a sold out event in the The Mitchell theatre with Alain De Botton talking about his book on the pleasures and sorrows of work. A real insight into the a part of our lives that rarely pops up in popular culture (The Office a notable exception) yet takes up SO much of our time. It prompted a number of the audience to thank him afterwards and begin a re-evaluation of where they are at in their careers.
On Saturday, I was joined in The Mitchell by the girls of The Radio Book Club who were recording an interview with Jasper Fforde for an upcoming show. Becs, Julie and Kate interviewed like real pros and and might have lined up a role for themselves in next year’s Aye Write! After listening to all their wonderfully probing questions, I had to take the stage with Jasper for another sold out event, this time in the Jeffrey Room. Jasper Fforde, was his sparkling self as usual and had the audience intrigued by his new book, Shades of Grey, and in stitches at his unique perspective on writing.
I had to leave Jasper with a huge queue of fans waiting for books to be signed to rush back upstairs and meet Greg Milner. Greg was visiting from his home in Brooklyn to discuss his book Perfecting Sound Forever a journey through the history of recorded music from Edison to the mp3. Another great audience of 100+ were captivated by Greg’s discussion and his audio clips which helped by providing some examples of some of the phenomenon he was describing. One that seemed to catch the audiences imagination was the concept of “loudness”. Over the last 20 or so years sound mixers have been making music louder and louder and according to Greg this peaked with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers Californication in 1999. You can read more about loudness here or in Greg’s wonderful book.
One quote from Greg’s book that stuck in my head was that in the process of converting a song from CD to MP3 around 80-90% of the actual music is lost and the gaps are filled by your brain.
Another quick turnaround and I was back on stage in the Jeffrey room with Janet Paisley and Manda Scott. Another big audience heard the authors talking about their mission to give a voice to some of the great women who’s stories have been lost in history. History is peppered with strong females who have been sidelined by their more famous male counterparts and Janet and Manda have a role in redressing the balance. Manda then told us of some of her fascinating research while working on her new series on Rome and her investigations into the key figures of the time. Some controversial views on Jesus, Paul and Peter were discussed and I was left thinking a non fiction book of her findings would be a great, if somewhat controversial, read.
That was the end of a tiring but fun day!
Another day of chairing started on Sunday with yet another sold out event in the theatre, this time local hero Christopher Brookmyre was on stage. I didn’t have much to do as the chair as Christopher had the audience howling with laughter at his reading and then at his stories of a former translator’s attempts to translate into French some choice Glaswegian phrases. He then talked about a change of direction for his future books where he is moving away from the satirical, hyper reality he is well known for to tackle a more serious style of crime writing. His new series to be set in a fictional area of Glasgow will tackle some of Glasgow gangland culture and I’m sure his unmistakeable wit will still shine through.
The weekend was rounded of for me with a final event with Charles Emmerson and Sara Wheeler. The two Oxford graduates, journalists and authors were discussing their latest books which offer in depth discussions on the Arctic and its people. With the Arctic firmly on the political agenda due to the battle for natural resources and climate change, the audience were captivated by views of two experts in the area.
So ended a great weekend at Aye Write! Audience’s were huge and it was great to see how the festival continues to grow in stature and popularity each year. All credit to Karen Cunningham, Andrew Kelly and everyone in Glasgow libraries for producing another successful year. I’m saying this and there is still another 7 days left!!!!!!
I’ll be back on Wednesday to host an event about equality in society so hopefully see you then, if not I hope you make it along to one of the events and enjoy this wonderful festival.
If you haven’t seen it, get on the Aye Write! website and get booking your tickets.
Currently loving the music on the BBC This Week advert and it took me a while to track it down so I thought I’d share it with you all, maybe you were looking for it too?
It’s “I Giorni” by Ludovico Einaudi and according to Last fm……
The inspiration for Ludovico Einaudi’s whole piece, “I Giorni”, was a 12th-century folk song from Mali about a hippopotamus who was cherished by the residents of a nearby village but killed by a hunter. In his liner notes, Einaudi wrote that “The song is sung as a lament for the death of a king or a great person or for the loss of a loved one.”
Of course, he was referring to the entirity of the piece, but the meaning does apply to the beautiful, synonymous movement and heart of the work.
Google have made the inevitable leap into the wonderful world of Social Media. Coming the same week Facebook confused users with yet another interface tweek, Google is the talk of the Internet with a new product which will make it easier than ever for GoogleMail users to go Social.
Todd Jackson of Google introduced the five key features of Google Buzz:
1. Auto-following
2. Rich, fast sharing experience
3. Public and private sharing
4. Inbox integration
5. Just the good stuff
I’ve just downloaded the Iphone app so I’m off for a play about, let me know how you are finding it and if you think it can be a serious contender to Facebook and Twitter?
Doiop – simple to use and handy for marketers as you can choose your own keyword instead of just getting a random selection of numbers and letters.
Result – http://doiop.com/urlblog (24 characters) although you have to play about with the keywords until you find a free one, obviously this process will get more time consuming in time as all the best ones are used up but potentially a great tool
DwarfURL – simple to use with the ability to add a password which you can use to login and see stats like how many clicks and from where. Useful if tracking a campaign over a large area.
Bit.ly – this is my (and Twitter’s) current favourite shortener for it’s balance of simplicity and functionality. Quickly get your new URL and then next time you login you can easily see all your previous links and number of click throughs which allows for a quick overview. In another click you can see more details and graphs like location, referrers and clicks. One additional feature which make bit.ly stand out is it can also tell you at a glance if your URL has appeared in Twitter or FriendFeed, again very useful for tracking a campaign across the social media landscape.
Top blogger Seth Godin has put together an ebook called “What Matters Now” bringing together mini essays of many oftoday’s best thinkers in marketing and business. Not all of it will be relevant to you and it does get a wee bit airy fairy in places but the breadth of ideas is to be expected with so many contributors.
I suggest you have a read and I guarantee you will come away with at least one thing that makes you look at an issue or problem in a different way today
According to an article on Mashable, the people at Google are “dogfooding” a new mobile phone which hopes to rival the I Phone.
I hope the phone is better than their choice of words, although supposedly the term originated at Microsoft in the late 80s.
If you like me have never come across this term before here is an explanation from Google’s Mario Queiroz:
“At Google, we are constantly experimenting with new products and technologies, and often ask employees to test these products for quick feedback and suggestions for improvements in a process we call dogfooding (from “eating your own dogfood”). Well this holiday season, we are taking dogfooding to a new level.
We recently came up with the concept of a mobile lab, which is a device that combines innovative hardware from a partner with software that runs on Android to experiment with new mobile features and capabilities, and we shared this device with Google employees across the globe. This means they get to test out a new technology and help improve it.
Unfortunately, because dogfooding is a process exclusively for Google employees, we cannot share specific product details. We hope to share more after our dogfood diet.”
As a technology fan and avid reader, I’m a wee bit surprised that none of the e-readers currently on the market have managed to part me from my cash. I think I’ll wait and see who turns out to be the VHS and who is the Betamax. I had my fingers burnt once when as a kid I opted for the technically superior colour Atari Lynx only to find all my friends playing the black and white Gameboy.
I’m not convinced any of those currently on the market will be the winner, none of them has brought all the essential ingredients together in one irresistible package yet – there isn’t yet an ipod for books…….yet!
Below are a few of the current hot e-readers with links to more info. We are still waiting for Apple to enter this market, maybe they will do it again or maybe one of these will become the world’s e reader of choice!
For those of you who fondly remember the dawn of the Mac, you can relive the early Mac User experience everyday on Twitter with this new client from the good people at retards.org.
I’ve been looking around recently for a user friendly audio host which will allow me to embed our two hour book shows from Pulse98.4 on theradiobookclub blog.
Sound Cloud to the rescue – easy to use, easy to embed, perfect!
Only downside is that for simplicity it allocates you 2hr of time rather than say 2 Gb of space. Problem being that I can mix down the 2 hr show from 1.5Gb to around 600Mb, which would save space but doesn’t decrease time so I still use up my whole free allocation with one show
I could upgrade to their premium service but in the world of FREE I think I’ll get by for now
Twitter makes it into number one illustrating the media’s love of Twitter. Surprisingly Facebook wasn’t in there and interestingly “Cloud Computing” made it to number 6 on the phrases of the year.
I really love watching language evolve and according the the GLM, English gains a new word every 98 minutes (or about 14.7 new words a day) so keep them coming and I’ll be delepeased. Feel free to suggest some below
As you probably know Adobe launched their new Photoshop I phone app back at the beginning of October in the US and for some strange reason it is still not available in the UK
It was free on launch and hopefully it will be free for a period on the UK app store when they eventually get around to it but in the mean time there is a way to get it here too.
All you have to do is open a free US Itunes account, download the Photoshop app to your Itunes and then synch it to your phone from there. Easy enough but a bit more complicated then just buying it straight from the appstore on my phone. Why Adobe….WHY??????????
Once you’ve got it you will see some nifty little features although experienced Photoshop users might be looking for a wee bit more and don’t get me started on why you can’t upload straight to your social media from the app. Instead having to save to the camera roll, quit and then load Facebook, Twitter or whatever.
Maybe they are sorting that all out before the finally grace the UK market with it, who knows?
UPDATE – Now available in the UK, they haven’t added any social uploading functionality yet though
For those of you attempting to introduce social media and working in a large organisation with legal departments and long, long chains of command, here’s a funny from the genius Tom Fishburne that should strike a chord.
I find Tweetdeck great for dealing with multiple searches as they can be easily viewed in separate columns minimising the need for retyping search items on every visit.
Twitteriffic is particularly good for having multiple accounts as it is very easy to switch between both and it is also very clear which I am using at a particular time, helping me avoid potential work / social mix ups
There are a lot of Facebook / Twitter link ups happening at the moment with multiple status updaters like ping.fm so I was wondering if anyone else had any hints or tips from their favourite Twitter client?
Just been on the web version of Twitter and noticed they have introduced some tweeks to the list feature which was added recently. You can now add descriptions to give a wee bit more info about exactly what your list is about.
They are also beta testing a new way to see Retweets, see image. It’s been an interesting period of development on Twitter, let’s hope they don’t take it too far and lose the beauty of the first version, which was that it was so simple!
So I’ve been analysing the stats on my other blogs and it seems that a mention of a showing of High School Musical in our theatre made the hits on the blog go through the roof. Lets hope at least a few of the people visiting saw something else worth coming back for
Talking of nice charts made me think of a sure fire way of creating a visual statement in a document….Word Clouds.
They look great and with the help of something like www.wordle.net they are really easy to produce.
Here’s one I produced recently which represents 150 responses from children aged 8-12 to the question “Why did today’s event make you want to read more books?”.
Ever had to create a chart quickly? Or want something that stands out more than the usual Excel Charts?
I have and I found these sites to help me. Finding the right arrow, box shapes graphics and colours can be difficult as well as time consuming so let these apps do the work.
I bookmarked them last week and I’ve already used them three times so I thought I’d share them.
http://lovelycharts.com/ – User friendly site to create organisational or flow charts in seconds.
Just as the Xbox announces its new Facebook Integration, it’s been “leaked” from Sony that they will be getting in on the FB action soon too. The screenshot seems legit and of course Sony are saying nothing so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
Fingers on the Hide button of heavy gaming friends, their posts could soon be getting a whole lot duller- “Now on Level 1,2,3,4,5………”
With LinkedIn recently hitting 50M members and growing at a rate of 1 member per second. I decided I should revisit the profile I had made up over a year ago. After a bit of a spruce up and update of what I’ve been up to in that year I embarked on a new mission to connect with former colleagues and new business connections. In the days since I have had a fair bit of success. A few messages have been exchanged and some meetings set up with interesting contacts. It’s good to be able to delineate my social life in Facebook with my professional life in LinkedIn. I’m still exploring some of the additional features in LinkedIn but enjoying my new journey so far.
A great way to bring Social Media into the workplace is Yammer.
It’s Twitter with a business edge as only people from within your network can access or read the posts, or do we call them yams???
You can also setup rooms where each member of a particular project or department can communicate privately, allowing real time collaboration without clogging up email.
Its easy to get going too as all you have to do is get everyone in the organisation answering the simple question “What are you working on?”. It’s amazing knowing what colleagues down the corridor are working on and being able to spot potential crossover or opportunities. With a few extra clicks users can create mini social profiles which can function as a low cost, user updated internal directory with the option for photos. Good for putting a face to the name in larger organisations!
